FRONT GALLERY: Paintings BY KELLI SHORT

JANUARY 3rd - FEBRUARY 1st, 2025

The Hutchinson Art Center is excited to feature the work of Hutchinson, KS artist Kelli Snider-Short in our Front Gallery for the months of January and February.

Kelli Snider-Short’s creative pursuits began in childhood when she would go through her mother and grandmother’s fabric remnants and put them together to create flashy fashion designs. As she grew older, she would try and fit as many art classes as she could into her schedule, along with other creative classes such as woodworking and sewing.

Today, Kelli uses art as a means of therapy. She is a practitioner of reiki, yoga, sound therapy, and uses painting, jewelry making, sewing, and even cooking as a way to transmute tense or anxious energy into something nourishing. Most of her work lives in the realm of abstract with occasional representations of nature.

This exhibition will be on display in the Front Gallery from January 3rd - February 1st, 2025.

main gallery: artwork BY jUDY scott and aMY pilger

JANUARY 10th - FEBRUARY 15th, 2025

The Hutchinson Art Center is looking forward to displaying the work of sisters Judy Scott and Amy Pilger in our Main Gallery for months of January and February, sharing the space with artist Denise Biberstein.

Despite having grown up in the same household, sisters Judy Scott and Amy Pilger have developed their own artistic styles – Judy prefers warm hues while Amy prefers a cooler palette. However, both credit their mother, who was a creative herself, for influencing their artistic pursuits.

Judy, a retired art teacher, holds a Master’s degree in Ceramics from Fort Hays State University and currently works as an artist. She is inspired by the landscapes of western Kansas and the communities in which she lives. Similarly, Amy, who lives in Green Valley, Arizona, is influenced by the world around here, finding shapes, lines, patterns, textures, and colors everywhere she looks.

This exhibition will be on display in the Main Gallery from January 10th - February 15th, 2025.

front gallery: SELF-PORTRAITS by Homer Gilson

FEBRUARY 7th - MARCH 7th, 2025

The Hutchinson Art Center is excited to feature the work of Hutchinson, KS artist Homer Gilson in our Front Gallery for the months of February and March!

This what Homer has to say about himself and his artistic practice:

“At 78, I have been around the block a few times. But I have discovered that life is an art form! Whether it is painting, music, raising kids, or the love of a partner or friend -- it all requires an appreciation of art, in its many forms and expressions. My personality is similar to Einstein’s -- being a rational rational. I have a fondness and appreciation for Gene Roddenberry and the TV show Star Trek.

I believe I have three brains -- Me, Myself, and I! We talk and they are part of my creative process! I have one painting drawn completely by I, my subconscious mind. It is a painting of Me and I. The third brain is Myself and it is the ‘Scotty’ down in the engine room or gut. He is all my primitive instincts, appetites, and DNA. Me and I are kept busy censoring Myself.”

This exhibition will be on display in the Front Gallery from February 7th - March 7th, 2025.

MAIN GALLERY: Artwork by JIM and JAKE HAYWARD

FEBRUARY 21st - MARCH 14th, 2025

The Hutchinson Art Center is looking forward to displaying the artwork of father-and-son duo of Jim and Jake Hayward in our Main Gallery for the months of February and March.

Today he paints and builds 3D assemblages with found objects and wood in the studio and gallery he owns in Independence, KS. His work hangs in private collections and public buildings in the U.S., Canada, and Sweden.

His son Jake Hayward is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Houston, TX. In creating art, he finds humor or boldness even in the face of grief. He views grief as a void we are conscious of but do not fully understand. By exploring this void, his hope is to foster conversations about a subject that needs addressing but is often suppressed in our society.
