Main Gallery: Paintings by andy brown

NOVEMBER 22nd, 2024 to JANUARY 4th, 2025

The Hutchinson Art Center is proud to show the work of artist Andy Brown in our Main Gallery during the the final months of 2024 and into the beginning of 2025.

Andy Brown grew up in the northern Chicago area, living in various suburbs as well as Chicago proper. He attended a junior college, where he studied art and was highly influenced by the Art Institute of Chicago’s gallery. After graduating with an Association of Art, he attended the University of Kansas as an out-of-state student and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting & Sculpture in 1974.

In 1980, he moved from Chicago to Newton, Kansas to be part of a church there. In the mid-1980s, he attended Wichita State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science around 1987. He worked as a software developer until retirement in 2016.

His current work is as an artist. He rents a studio space across the tracks from the Newton Amtrack station, enjoying community there with 3 other artists. He tries to spend 4 hours a day there. You can see some of his work upstairs at the Carriage Factory Art Gallery in Newton. He also is an active member of the Hutchinson Art Center.

This what Andy Brown has to say about his work:

“My art is an expression of 4 meditations I have practiced for decades: The colors blue, red, yellow, and green. For me, each color represents an emotion or state of mind.

Blue is for peace, serenity, and acceptance.

Red is for the love of God, of Self and my Neighbors - which includes people that are easy to love and so on all the way down to my enemies.

Yellow is for Joy, a discipline I work on by recalling gratitudes or sometimes simply walking in sunshine.

Green makes me think of the way plants store up energy from the sun, of the energy in oil - especially oil for a brightly flamed lamp.”

This exhibition is on display in the Main Gallery from November 22nd, 2024 - January 4th, 2025.

FRONT GALLERY: Cyanotypes by Becky Brinkley

DECEMBER 4th to 28th, 2024

The Hutchinson Art Center is excited to feature the work of Kansas artist Becky Brinkley during the month of December.

Becky Brinkley is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Kansas City. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute. Upon graduation she continued working in fiber arts, textiles, photography, and dental ceramics.

Becky’s current artistic pursuits include creating and experimenting with cyanotypes. A cyanotype is a historical printing process from the 1800s. Traditionally, the technique involves placing an object on paper coated in iron salts, exposing the paper to UV light, and washing the paper with water — no camera needed. The result is a unique white and Prussian blue image.

Her collection of “cameraless photographs,” which feature flowers from her garden as well as plants she collects from the wild, represents the exploration of several interests, including horticulture, floral forms amid the interconnectedness of the natural world, and our human experience.

This exhibition is on display in the Front Gallery from December 4th - 28th, 2024.
