Main Gallery: Sia Joung "The Surface"


Sia Joung is an artist and an educator who lives and works in Sterling, Kansas. She holds an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis and a BFA in Painting and Drawing from University of Iowa. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US, including Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis, MO, Des Lee Gallery, St. Louis, The Delaware Contemporary Art Museum, Wilmington, DE and Delaware College Art Gallery, Media PA.

Artist Statement:
“Growing up as an immigrant in a small town of Iowa, my natural inclination towards the Regionalists’ paintings unintentionally revealed a displacement of an Asian American in Midwest. In a similar sense, living in a rural Kansas has perpetuated my identity as a Christian without my intention.

My work observes how my identities receive different shading and change their distinctiveness as my location shifts. As my identities shift, my mediums change correspondingly. My goal as an artist is to capture this complexity and its layers to visualize in paintings and installations. “ - Sia Joung
